Sandy Engle and Cris Fellows, participants in the Community Herbal Intensive – Level 2 hit the road yesterday with Leah Wolfe  via the Black Pearl.* We went to Detroit, MI to attend a lecture with herbalist Matthew Wood. The subject was Southern Blood Typology, a folk assessment method for understanding health issues that came from Africa and was

adapted widely in the south. The source of his knowledge is Phyllis Light, an herbalist from the Appalachia Center for Natural Health. He talked about his own experience using Southern Blood Typology as an herbalist.

*The Black Pearl is the Trillium Center’s Mobile Education Clinic making education accessible to people in the region. We focus on community herbalism, experimental building projects, ceramics, and sustenance farming.
